The Beer Pilgrim

Weirdest Beer Experiences

Big Baobab Tree Bar, Limpopo Province, South Africa

This has to be one of the coolest and weirdest places to have a beer. At a bar, inside the trunk of a living tree. I’d imagine it would feel like you have gone down the rabbit hole and ended up in wonderland. Try telling your mates about the beer that you drank in a tree trunk… surely, no one would believe you!

Kagaya Bar and Restaurant, Tokyo Japan.

I can safely say this is the weirdest place I have ever had a beer…

The weirdest part about it is, that it isn’t weird at all… until the owner shows up.

Mark Kagaya is an extremely nice, timid-looking Japanese man who has completely lost the plot. My first meeting with this character of universal proportions was Mark dressed up in a Kermit the frog onesie jumping around the restaurant along with a wind-up mechanical frog screaming at the top of his lungs. And that was at the ‘normal’ end of my evening.

Not for the faint hearted. Expect loads of choices of great Japanese Beers, good food and an overdose of complete weirdness.

Beer Spa, Chodovar Brewery, Czech Republic

According to the Chodovar website: “The aim of the baths involves harmonising functions of the organism, mental rest, recondition and relaxation. The procedures have curative effects on the complexion and hair, relieve muscle tension, warm up joints and support immune system of the organism” – I’m not sure which organism he/she might be referring to, but to bathe entirely in beer! Ill put my hand up for that one.

‘Das Klo’ Bar, Berlin Germany.

Das Klo, literally translates to ‘the toilet’. If you want to drink beer out of a bed pan and sit on a toilet while your doing it (and I couldn’t image who wouldn’t!) then this is the place for you. A seriously weird night out (even by Berlin standards..)

Disaster Café, Lloret de Mar, Spain

Ever thought how on earth you could hold your beer if you got hit by a 7.8 magnitude earthquake? Well… now you can find out – at the Disaster Café in Lloret de Mar, Spain where earthquakes are simulated throughout the evening in this completely out-of-the-ordinary restaurant/bar. You don’t know when it will hit, and you probably don’t want to be mid-sip wearing your favourite Billy Joel t-shirt when it does, but when you get struck, beware….

Darwin Beer Can Rally, Darwin Australia.

If there is ever a sign that Darwinians love a good tin, then this is it. I guess the cans just kept piling up and one day some genius decided to build a boat out of his empty beer cans and float it off Mindil Beach in Darwin. Then I guess someone else thought it looked like fun and decided to do the same, then another… and now it is a full-blown top-of-the-calendar tourist attraction for Darwin. It really is a huge amount of fun – some of these beer-can boat designs will seriously blow you away. A great day out in a beautiful part of the world. Just remember to recycle your cans if you do decide to participate…
